         *चन्द्रहास नाम का एक राजपुत्र था। एक युद्ध में उसके पिता राजा सुधार्मिक की मृत्यु होने पर, उसकी माँ भी पिता की ही चिता पर सती हो गई थी। चन्द्रहास अनाथ हो गया।* *चन्द्रहास के भी प्राणों पर संकट देख, एक दासी चन्द्रहास को अपने कपड़ों में छिपा कर अपने घर ले गई और उसे अपना पुत्र समझकर पाला।* *इधर चन्द्रहास कुछ बड़ा हुआ तो उधर मंत्री धृष्टबुद्धि ने ब्राह्मणों से अपनी एकमात्र कन्या विषया के भावी वर के बारे में पूछा। ब्राह्मणों ने वहाँ पास ही खेलते उसी दासी पुत्र, चन्द्रहास की ओर इशारा कर दिया।*    

              एक छोटा सा गांव था। गांव में एक वृद्ध साधु थे, जो गांव से थोड़ी सी दूरी पर स्थित श्रीकृष्ण मंदिर में कन्हैया की पूजा-अर्चना करते और प्रतिदिन सायंकाल नियमपूर्वक अपनी झोपड़ी से निकलकर मंदिर जाते और भगवान के सम्मुख दीपक जलाते। उसी गांव में एक नास्तिक व्यक्ति भी रहता था। उसने भी प्रतिदिन का नियम बना रखा था ‛दीपक बुझाने का’। जैसे ही साधु भगवान के सामने दीपक जला कर मंदिर से घर लौटते,
